Spatial reasoning practice
Spatial reasoning questions on CCAT-style tests ask you to rotate shapes mentally, complete 3×3 matrices, and spot the odd figure out. For most candidates this is the least familiar category — few jobs exercise mental rotation — which also makes it the category where a few days of practice moves your score the most.
The three formats
Rotation items show a figure and ask which option is the same figure turned (not flipped — a mirror image is the classic wrong answer). Matrix items show a 3×3 grid following row and column rules with one cell missing. Odd-one-out items show four or five figures where one breaks the shared rule.
Matrices usually combine exactly two rules — one across rows, one down columns (rotation, shading, count, size). Name each rule out loud in your head before looking at the options; candidates who look at options first anchor on a wrong pattern.
Rotation vs. reflection
The single most valuable spatial skill for these tests: telling a rotation from a reflection quickly. Pick one asymmetric detail of the figure (the foot of an L, the flag on a pole) and track only that detail through each option. If the detail ends up on the wrong side, the option is a mirror image no matter how right the rest looks.
Pacing and common mistakes
Budget 25–40 seconds — spatial items are legitimately slower than verbal ones, and that's fine if you've banked time earlier. Don't rotate all four options; rotate the target once to a canonical position and compare. And on matrices, check your answer satisfies BOTH rules — most distractors satisfy exactly one.
