Logical reasoning practice
Logical reasoning questions on CCAT-style tests are mostly syllogisms ('all A are B; some B are C; therefore…'), ordering puzzles, and short deductions. They look intimidating, but they follow a small set of rules — and unlike vocabulary, those rules are fully learnable in a week. The trap is treating them casually: logic items punish 'sounds right' answers more than any other category.
Syllogisms: trust the rules, not your intuition
A syllogism asks whether a conclusion must follow from the statements — not whether it's plausible in the real world. 'All accountants are careful; some careful people are shy' does NOT let you conclude that some accountants are shy: the shy careful people might all be non-accountants. Under time pressure, plausibility hijacks precision; the fix is to test conclusions mechanically, or sketch a quick mental Venn diagram.
The three verdicts you'll choose between are usually 'true', 'false', and 'uncertain'. 'Uncertain' is correct far more often than intuition suggests — it's the answer whenever the statements permit both outcomes.
Ordering and comparison puzzles
For 'Ana is taller than Ben; Carla is shorter than Ben' chains, write the order down mentally in one line (A > B > C) as you read. Building the chain once and reading answers off it is twice as fast as re-deriving the relationship for every option.
Pacing and common mistakes
Budget 20–30 seconds. The classic errors: converting 'all A are B' into 'all B are A' (it doesn't reverse), treating 'some' as 'most', and importing outside knowledge into the premises. If a conclusion needs any fact that isn't in the statements, the answer is 'uncertain' — full stop.
